How do we treat Fungal Infections?

Treatment 1 – Combination Therapy (Lamisil, Laser Therapy & Topical Treatment)

This treatment combines oral medication, advanced laser therapy, and topical antifungal treatment to target fungal nail infection from multiple angles.

Patients are prescribed oral Lamisil (terbinafine) to treat the fungal infection internally. This medication works through the bloodstream to attack the fungus within the nail bed and prevent further growth.

Alongside the medication, Class IV laser therapy is used during clinic visits. The laser emits focused light energy that penetrates the nail plate and targets fungal cells without damaging surrounding tissue. The light disrupts fungal organisms and helps eliminate the infection within the nail.

A topical antifungal treatment is also applied regularly to the affected nail. This helps treat fungus on the surface of the nail and surrounding skin while reducing the chance of reinfection.

This three-step approach increases the likelihood of successfully clearing the infection by treating it internally, externally, and directly within the nail.

Treatment 2 – Fungal Toenail Removal with Lamisil Therapy

For more severe or long-standing fungal infections, surgical removal of the affected toenail may be recommended.

During the procedure, the infected nail is carefully removed to eliminate the majority of fungal material and allow a healthy nail to regrow. Removing the nail also improves the effectiveness of antifungal treatment.

Following the procedure, patients are prescribed a three-month course of oral Lamisil (terbinafine). The medication works systemically to destroy any remaining fungal infection in the nail bed and surrounding tissue.

As the nail grows back over the following months, the antifungal medication helps ensure the new nail grows clear, healthy, and free from infection.

Signs and Symptoms of Fungal Nail Infections

Recognizing the early signs of a fungal nail infection is key to effective treatment. Common symptoms include:

  • Discoloration: Yellow, white, or brown streaks or patches on the nail.
  • Thickening: Nails become unusually thick and difficult to trim.
  • Brittleness: Crumbling or splitting nails that are fragile and prone to breaking.
  • Distorted shape: Nails may lose their natural shape or become misshapen.
  • Odor: A foul smell can sometimes develop if the infection worsens.
  • Separation from the nail bed: In severe cases, the nail may start to lift away from the nail bed.
